House of Kolor® was founded in 1956 by world-renowned
custom painter, Jon Kosmoski. Jon had rebuilt a '40 Chevy Coupe and took
it to the best paint shop in town. After having the car returned to him
with a less than satisfactory paint job from the "best" shop in
town, Jon knew it could be done better and decided to learn how. Since then
he has become an Icon of the custom paint community. Not only is he one
of the best painters around, he is one of the best paint makers around,
if not the best.
Having said all of that, we were fortunate enough to be able
to host a one night painting seminar taught by Jon Kosmoski himself and
we eagerly turned our paint shop over to him for the evening.
Jon covered every aspect of painting from the mixing of paints
themselves to proper gun adjustment and application techniques. According
to Mr. Kosmoski, whose teaching style is as colorful as the paints he mixes,
there is no need to leave things to chance in custom painting as long as
you follow a few basic rules and follow them consistently.
These include: knowing your equipment and how to use it properly;
knowing the paints and the materials they will be applied to; following
the instructions on the product (a pet peeve of Jon's); proper preparation;
and proper application.
Jon demonstrates taping techniques: both how to apply and
how to remove it.
Our windowed paint booth allowed seminar participants to observe
Jon while he painted various body parts.
In addition to showing spray techniques, Jon demonstrated
some of the new paints that House of Kolor is producing. The effects are
striking and these photos do not do them justice, especially their new candy
red paint.
