Battle of the Bulge
At the point where the back edge of the door and the body
come together, there is a "dip" created by the curvatures of the
door and body panels. The wire represents the desired body line, the way
it would be if it were an un-interupted surface.
The gap between the wire and the surface needs to be eliminated.
The gap will be eliminated by "shrinking" the rear
body panel between the door and fender to remove the bulge. This is done
by first heating a small area of metal with a torch.
The red spot is metal that has been heated all the way through
the torch.
The "hot spot" is then quenched with a wet rag to
cool it.
The heated metal is then hammered.
A dolly is used on the back side of the sheet metal to provide
a surface to hammer against. This process will be repeated accross the entire
surface area of the body panel that needs to be slimmed down.
