1939 Pontiac Woodie - Re-roofing.
Here's a good look at the roof before recovering. The first
step will be to glue a marine grade canvas over the top of the wood.
Once the canvas is in place, a 1/4-inch layer of "closed
cell" styrofoam is glued over the top of that. The styrofoam, which
comes on a roll like the canvas, is a type that will not absorb water.
Once it is all shaped and trimmed, it is ready for the outer
vinyl covering to be glued over the top.
Both the back side of the vinyl and the styrofoam are sprayed
with a tacky contact cement.
Before throwing the vinyl accross the top, a special fabric
with a slick, non-stick surface is laid accross the top. This will be pulled
out when the vinyl top covering is properly positioned.
One last pass with the glue.
